From August 2016 to February 2020, TVET and FET Private Colleges were required to register with the Department of Higher Education.
The Government Gazette of 7 February 2020 stated by the Director-General of Higher Education, Mr. Qonde. This statement revoked the aforementioned requirement, mentioning that private colleges no longer need to apply for registration with the DHET as the accreditation process no longer exists.
The accreditation previously awarded by the DHET remains valid for the colleges that have acquired this up until its expiry date. This accreditation usually expires within three to five years after it has been awarded. The accreditation can no longer be renewed.
The accreditation process now requires private colleges to get accredited by the QCTO. After successful accreditation, these colleges can apply for a DHET Examination Number as issued by their Exams Division.
Colleges receive their DHET exam number bypassing the DHET Exams Division registration requirements. They will also need a site visit from the DHET. After successful completion of the aforementioned, the private college will receive its exam number and be officially accredited.
